WRITE FROM THE HEART

I am a hairdresser/barber and I received my license in October of 2002. When I attended school I volunteered giving hair cuts at the Kettle Friendship Centre. The experiences added up and the rewards were gratifying. The following four years I worked in two hair shops, care homes, and created my own L.A. Hair Company mobile business. I also took a three-month business course.

In April of 2004 I met with Kim Calsaferri, Regional Manager of Rehabilitation and Recovery at Vancouver Costal Health. She mentioned a need for a hairdresser at VGH Mental Health Wards. I mentioned my experience and Kim put me in touch with Janet Ashdown of the Consumer Initiative Fund the rest just fell in place.

Every Tuesday from 9:00am to 3:00pm I perform hair services. I cover four wards including E1, E2, W1, and PAU. I supply all the tools and hair care products and spend about one and half hours on each ward on very busy days. I complete 8-10 hair cuts on these days. I have found little special places on each ward where I feel comfortable performing hair services. It feels like home.

I have received inspirational feedback from VGH staff and clients. There is defiantly a need at VGH and I am fortunate that I was able to fill it.
