A message received from a woman in Billings, Montana, who read an essay about tardive dyskinesia
I just read your article about TD from Jan 2008. I can't tell you how powerful it was for me. After a couple hours of searching TD, I gathered a lot of clinical information but not much personal experience. I have just the beginning stages – your comments on having to have a drink, lozenge, and getting hoarse were so dead-on for me – and not mentioned much where else.
Unfortunately, I can't go off my meds and I can't afford the atypical anti-psychotic that would probably be best for treating my severe bi-polar. I am relatively stable thanks to my meds, but as a professional and mother, I am hesitant to mess around with meds. My doctor is working with me, but I felt very empowered by what you wrote about not hiding due to stigma. My colleagues know I am mentally ill and fortunately I have a job I am good at (part-time – I can't work full-time), so I have some balance there, but it is a constant struggle and the prospect of TD terrifies me, especially the mental components. I can handle the tics and tremors for now, along with the weird mouth stuff, but it gave me hope to read your story. Thank you.
Hi,
I am very pleased that you found my story helpful. That was my intention for publishing it. You are right, there are virtually no personal experience pieces about TD published anywhere. Perhaps you would like to write something for HeartBeats about your experience with TD.
I belong to a support group for people with TD here in Vancouver, BC. It is a consumer-led group, also supported by Vancouver Coastal Health/Vancouver Community Mental Health Services' 'Consumer Initiative Funds' program. The facilitator is Susan Trapp.
If you like, I can forward your email to her and she will be in touch with you. If you are not local to Vancouver, she can send you educational information and keep you up to date and offer advice, too.
Let me know if you would like me to forward your email to her, and do keep in touch and let me know how you are doing with your TD solutions. In the meantime, I can tell you that I take 400mg of vitamin E four times/day, and that has made a big difference in my symptoms. Most people don't notice them anymore, except my tongue is still busy all the time inside my mouth.
regards...Susan
