SPARK: creative ideas for everyday life!
“So you see, imagination needs moodling --- long, inefficient, happy idling, dawdling and puttering.” Brenda Ueland.
SPARK is a creative jump-start to your life.
This project, currently in development, is producing a free booklet that will be available at local mental health facilities and online in a downloadable format.
Through inspirational ideas and artwork gathered from the mental health community, SPARK will offer readily accessible activities for free or at minimal cost. The ideas are a starting point for readers to embrace and appreciate the incredible tapestry of sights, sounds, smells, tastes and textures that surround us.
We will invite readers to make creativity a fundamental element in their lives. Creativity or art is more than just being able to draw or paint realistically; it is a way of showing others your perspective and learning more about yourself. SPARK will stretch your definition of creativity and art to include activities such as scavenger hunts, walking tours and natural food dyeing. The variety of activities included requires no prior art experience, just a healthy dose of enthusiasm.
The ideas will encourage readers to think more brilliantly, find adventure in routine, see the potential in everything and simply add more awe into everyday life. These simple acts are key to discovering who you are and what you love to do.
Stay tuned for SPARK project updates!

December 12, 2011: Great ideas and beautiful artworks have been flowing into SPARK. I look forward to sharing the booklet next year with everyone! In the meantime here are some lovely words I encountered about finding creative inspiration in daily routine.
“Look at your daily life, pay attention to what you do without thinking. Look at the things around you. The sites in your neighborhood as you take a walk. A phone conversation. Your favorite cup. A hole in your shoe. Your lunch.
Include the ugly parts, which we often discard. Use all these sources to create, paint, write, transform or change them. Your view of the world is unique and people will respond to your work when it is honest.”
Feb. 9, 2012:
SPARK workshops were wrapped up this week and the booklet is in the final stages of design! I look forward to sharing all the wonderful artwork and ideas with everyone!
Our aim is to start distributing printed booklets by March 1. Check back here for a free downloadable version of SPARK and a list of locations where you can pick up a printed copy in Greater Vancouver.
