A youth perspective on mental health

Together we can take action and improve the mental health system! The Mental Health Commission of Canada’s Youth Council has created a youth version of Changing Directions, Changing Lives: The Mental Health Strategy for Canada.

The Youth Council adapted the Strategy to reflect a youth perspective. They drew on personal experiences to make sense of a large policy document and turn it into something original and more accessible to youth.

They consulted with First Nations, Inuit, and Métis youth groups who helped them write sections that are culturally relevant and take into account FNIM histories. Never before has a group of Canadian young people designed a project of this scope or contributed to the field of knowledge exchange by translating a mental health policy document written largely for, and by, adults.

In The Mental Health Strategy: A Youth Perspective, the Youth Council has included examples of best practices that help bring to life many of the recommendations in the Strategy. We hope it will make mental health policy more accessible to anyone advocating for improvements to Canada’s mental health system.

We encourage you to share this document widely and start a conversation about mental health. All Canadians need to equip themselves with the right knowledge to have an informed say in the issues that affect them now and in the future.
