Courage to Speak Out Award – for students overcoming adversity (SFU)
Often those facing the toughest issues get the least encouragement and support. Those who have the most – get more. Those that have the least – often get less. This award is showing support and appreciation for people overcoming adversity.
The award is worth $1,000 and will be given annually to an undergraduate, in good academic standing and enrolled full-time in a Bachelor program in any faculty at SFU.
People dealing with concurrent disorders – mental health and substance use issues – are especially supported with this award.
The person will write a letter outlining their circumstances and their plans to use their education to help others. As well, they will provide a confirming letter of support or recommendation from an individual that they’ve worked with – a teacher, coach, counsellor, social worker, etc.
Preference will be given to someone overcoming adversity associated with poverty, co-occurring mental health and addictions and/or imprisonment.
The deadline for submitting an application is January 13, 2017, and the award will be given out early February. More information at students.sfu.ca/financialaid.html
Pass this on – please try to think of someone who might benefit from this award.
And if YOU feel inspired to make a contribution to help another person
in the future – feel good that 100% of your donation will go to the next student.
