Fall 2023 Youth Peer Support Worker training
with Fraser Health and the Integrated Child and Youth team
We are currently recruiting participants for the training and encourage you to share the following information with your team and any clients who may be interested in this opportunity. The attached application form is to be filled out by interested youth/young adults and the attached reference form is to be filled out by a professional who can comment on the young person’s wellness, strengths, and areas of growth.
Selected applicants will be invited to an interview to gain a better understanding of the applicant, their goals, interests, and ensure an understanding of the program details. References will also be contacted by phone.
The Youth Peer Support Worker program is open to youth aged 18 to 27 with lived experience of a mental health and/or substance use challenge who have 6 months reasonable wellness, a strong support network, and a desire to support others experiencing mental health and/or substance use challenges. The training consists of the following three main components:
- A free 10 week in-depth Youth Peer Support Worker (YPSW) training program, delivered in two 3-hour sessions per week (Tuesday and Thursday 9:30am-12:30pm). Delivery of the training will be hybrid (in-person and virtual Zoom sessions)
- Following completion of the training, participants complete a 60 hour practicum placement working with youth within the Fraser Health region (5-10 hours per week)
- After successfully completing the training and practicum portion of the program, participants will receive their Certificate of Completion and may be offered a part-time work contract up to 100-hours with Fraser to provide Youth Peer Support services for clients who would benefit from social and emotional support from peers who understand what they’re going through!
