LEAP – Dr. Xavier Amador

Sometimes people with mental health issues have ideas about illness, medication, treatment, etc. that are different from the family’s ideas.  The psychologist Dr. Xavier Amador has created a very useful way of communicating in those situations.  He calls it LEAP – Listen, Empathize, Agree, Partner.  By far the best way to learn about it is by reading his book “I’m Not Sick I Don’t Need Help”.  For a quick primer, our wonderful Becky Hynes has created a reference sheet.  You can find it here. Dr. Amador also has numerous videos out, like this one.
