Wanted: Notice of Peer Facilitator Contract: Work Party Group

Contract with: Kitsilano Mental Health Team, VCH
Location of work: Various VCH Mental Health Substance Use Team IPS sites
Duration of placement: 1 year contract with potential to renew, (maximum 84 hours)
Rate of Pay: $15 per hour with 7 hours work per month average
Work Party is a place to meet people who are working and sharing about what helps to find and to keep jobs. This is where you can talk about how your mental health and/or Substance Use Recovery fit into your work life. In addition, Work Party is a time for good ideas, fun, and peer to peer encouragement on the topic of employment.
Summary of Responsibilities:
Work Party Events- 3 hours per event
- Set-up of room and jointly facilitate support group meetings – ensuring meetings run smoothly with support of IPS (Individual Placement and Support) Vocational Staff
- Be open to a range of ways of understanding experiences and promoting the sharing of employment success stories
- Ensure everyone has a chance to speak
- Draw on Work Party resource materials in discussions and make these resources available to participants
- Share personal mental health/ substance and work experience for the benefit of the group or individuals
Work Party Planning- 2 hours per planning meeting
- Attend planning meetings as required
- Assist in setting agenda for planning
- With IPS Staff support help to recruit new team client members to planning committee
- Help to encourage client members to participate in Work Party events
Work Party Promotion- 2 hours per month
- In partnership with IPS staff attend Mental Health and Substance Use team meetings to promote Work Party Events and recruit new volunteers to planning committee
- In partnership with IPS staff, visit Rehab teams at Mental Health and Substance Use teams to promote Work Party events and planning process
Skills and Abilities: The successful individual will:
- have lived experience with Mental Health and or Substance Use and capacity to share experience peer to peer
- have personal experience with entering and leaving paid workforce (required)
- have personal experience receiving services within the mental health system (required)
- have completed a Peer Support Training Program and/or equivalent education and experience. Such as MH Worker Certificate, WRAP Facilitator Training, Peer Facilitator Training, or other equivalent.
- have demonstrated experience with groups and facilitation
- have excellent listening and communication skills
- have the ability to attend sessions consistently and be highly reliable to commitments
- have a successful completion of a criminal record check (organized by VCH)
- be able to be a role model to people recovering from a serious mental illness by sharing common life experiences and practical information
- have effective strategies for dealing with stress
- be able to work cooperatively with mental health staff, consumers and family members
- be able to work with a culturally diverse population
- be willing to respect other people’s right to decline assistance
- be able to adequately access public transportation,
- be able to present in a professional manner, and
- Be empathetic, patient and supportive.
Time Commitment
Work Party is an event based position and as such hours will vary from month to month. Minimum call out time is 2 hours at one time, and average hours per month are expected to be 4-7 hours. Total one year contract is not to exceed 84 hours.
