Street Messaging Service (SMS) for DTES

cell phone

Vancouver Community Network (VCN) is setting up what they call a Street Messaging Service for the Downtown East Side.  VCN has noticed that a lot of people have cell phones, so they came up with the idea of using SMS messaging as a way of getting critical information out (such as shelter information, meal sources, warnings about bad batches of drugs) to the residents and street residents.  People can choose one or more of various topics (shelter, food, health, and jobs/training) to receive SMS updates.

The project recently received funding from the Canadian Internet Registration Authority (CIRA)’s Community Investment Program.
